On 17th February, 1915, the enemy blew a mine and occupied a crater where the 2nd East Yorkshire battalion 83 Brigade, 28th Division battalion were holding the line near Zillebeke just to the south of Ypres. The 2nd Royal Lancaster battalion were in nearby support trenches and successfully counter attacked with two platoons and recaptured the lost position but suffered nearly fifty casualties while doing so. One of these was William Ashby who was killed. |
